Nowfos: What’s in a name?

The name Nowfos reflects both the urgency and the intention behind our work.

“Now” represents the present moment, a recognition that many women are experiencing challenges right now. Social isolation, lack of confidence, and limited access to supportive community spaces are not distant or abstract issues; they are current, lived realities. Nowfos exists in response to this immediate need for change, action, and connection. Our work is rooted in the belief that meaningful support does not have to wait for a future solution – it can begin now, within local communities.

“Now” also speaks to participation and agency. It reflects our focus on live, in-person experiences that encourage women to engage actively in their own growth. Through community-led courses, workshops, and creative activities, Nowfos supports women to take steps forward in real time, supported by others around them.

The second part of our name, “Fos”, comes from the Greek word for light. Light has long been associated with learning, clarity, and possibility. Within Nowfos, Fos represents the outcomes we aim to support: increased confidence, new skills, creative expression, and a stronger sense of personal freedom. It reflects the idea that when women are given access to knowledge, creativity, and supportive spaces, they are better able to see opportunities, make choices, and participate fully in their communities.

Fos also symbolises shared light rather than individual spotlight. At Nowfos, growth is collective. Our courses and activities are designed to create environments where women learn together, support one another, and build confidence through connection. The light is not something given from above, but something that emerges through community.

Together, Nowfos expresses our core mission: creating accessible, community-based opportunities that support women’s wellbeing, learning, and connection in the present moment. It reflects our commitment to practical action, inclusivity, and empowerment through creativity and shared experience.
